Insights from Team USA Figure Skater Camden Pulkinen April 2025 Team USA’s very own Camden Pulkinen recently shared his journey and insights into becoming a professional figure skater with members of the MFSCH. Here's what aspiring skaters can learn from his experiences: Starting Out: Camden's figure skating story began in Arizona at the age of five, initially through hockey. His transition to figure skating was influenced by his desire to compete with his sister. Over the years, his commitment led him from Arizona to Colorado Springs for better training opportunities, and now to New York, where he balances his skating career with studies in psychology and economics at Columbia University. Learning from Experience: Pulkinen emphasized the importance of allowing oneself time to emotionally recover after competitions, especially those that didn't go as planned. He advocates for a day of reflection, urging skaters to then dive into the details of what went wrong or could be improved. This process involves a meticulous assessment of both technique and mental preparation. For instance, when working on quad jumps, Pulkinen focuses on technique and height to prepare for future advancements in his routines. In retrospect, Pulkinen mentioned that he wished he had practiced his jumps with the goal of incorporating an extra rotation when progressing to the next jump. Balancing Life and Skating: One of the key points Camden highlighted was the necessity of a balanced life. He stressed the importance of not letting skating define one's entire identity. Despite the rigorous demands of both skating and academia, Pulkinen makes time for a social life, which he sees as crucial for mental health and preventing burnout. He organizes his week into high, low, and medium days to manage his training intensity effectively. Routine and Nutrition: A consistent routine supports both his physical and mental health. His day starts with a nutritious breakfast, often an egg and bacon scramble accompanied by orange juice and water, supplemented by snacks to keep his energy levels up during practice. This disciplined approach to nutrition and routine helps maintain his performance peak. The Role of Coaches: Pulkinen credits much of his success to his coaches, who provide not just technical training but also understand his needs as a student-athlete. Their flexibility and openness have been pivotal in his development, allowing him to explore and push his limits confidently. Competition Insights: Competing internationally, Camden notes, brings a different level of pressure compared to national events. He prepares by studying the competitive landscape and understanding the venues. Vocalizing his nerves and seeking support from peers has been beneficial. Celebrating the victories of his teammates, he finds, is one of the most rewarding aspects of his competitive life. Conclusion: Camden Pulkinen’s session with the MFSCH was not just about sharing how to become a top-tier figure skater but also about fostering growth, understanding, and hard work in all aspects of life. His insights remind us that while dedication to sport is crucial, so too is the dedication to oneself as a whole person. Through Pulkinen's experiences, young skaters have a blueprint not just for success in figure skating but for a well-rounded life where passion, hard work, and personal growth coexist. A heartfelt thanks to Camden for his insights and to Pei Pei Tan for facilitating this enlightening opportunity.

When applying for a contingent test, please note that the test fee will be forfeited if the test cannot be taken. Why in-person test sessions are important: Direct Interaction with Judges In-person sessions allow skaters to interact with judges in real-time, which can be beneficial for learning and improving skating skills. Personal Touch The presence of club staff and fellow skaters can create a supportive and encouraging atmosphere, which can enhance the testing experience. Official Recognition Passing an in-person test is a formal recognition of a skater's achievements, which can be a significant milestone in their skating career. Community Support In-person sessions provide a sense of community, as skaters, come together to support each other and the testing process. These factors contribute to the importance of in-person U.S. Figure Skating (USFS) test sessions, making them a vital part of the skating experience for many skaters. MFSCH hosts four (4) test sessions each year as a benefit to our Club members, those from other clubs, and members of USFS. The effort includes planning and coordinating the event: sourcing officials, reimbursing travel costs, obtaining ice time and volunteers, feeding officials and coaches, managing the test event, and processing paperwork with USFS. Trial Judges For those interested in trial judging, please email test@memorialfsch.org . Questions? Please direct all testing inquiries to: test@memorialfsch.org DEI RESOURCE SPOTLIGHT The Skating Accommodation Memorandum (S.A.M.) U.S. Figure Skating's Adaptive Skating Committee created the Skating Accommodation Memorandum to foster equitable skating standards for skaters with disabilities, develop increased opportunities for skaters with disabilities to continue their skating growth and support reasonable accommodations to do so. A skater with a documented disability may request exemption from or modification of certain technical rules on the basis that such rule penalizes them in the marking of the assessment and that such rule is peripheral to the skating skill to be demonstrated for testing and 6.0 non-qualifying competitions. These accommodations are determined collaboratively through the review of the skater’s medical documentation by a disability specialist on the Adaptive Skating Subcommittee. When necessary, other committees (i.e., testing, competition, and sports science and medicine) will be consulted as well. How do I r equest a S.A.M.? Any skater with a disability, regardless of track, may request reasonable accommodations for competitions and testing through the Skating Accommodation Memorandum (S.A.M.), a form found in the Adaptive Skating section of the USFS website's Members Only section. A test chair will notify the judges/judge-in-charge serving on a panel who is testing a skater using a S.A.M. The LOC will notify the Chief Referee of the S.A.M. For competition or testing, the officials will follow the directions of the S.A.M. and assess the skater as expected with regard to any accommodations provided. How does an official respond notified of a skater using a S.A.M. at a test session or nonqualifying 6.0 competition? A judge or referee will read and follow the S.A.M.’s explicit directions. If the official, Chief Referee, test chair or LOC have questions in regard to the S.A.M., please contact the chair of the Adaptive Skating Subcommittee immediately. Skates: There will be benches where skaters can take their skates on and off as needed. Water and snacks: There are public water fountains at the rink. There are various restaurants within the mall and nearby. 2. Arrival Time & Schedule Arrive at least one hour before your scheduled event. Events may start slightly early or late, so remain alert and keep track of announcements for any updates. When less than 10 min remain before the scheduled start of your event, it is advised to stay close to the area of the ice entrance. 3. Check-In Upon arrival, check in at registration at the front desk to confirm your participation and get your athlete credential. You must also check in with the Ice Monitor at the ice entrance as soon as you arrive. 4. Stand Away from the Glass and Ice Entrances Parents, please hand-off your skater to their coach before their event. No parents, legal guardians, or spectators are allowed to crowd or stand at rink doors. For the safety of all participants, we must keep this area clear so skaters can enter and exit the ice safely. Do not lean on or stand at the glass of the ice rink—please stand back to maintain a clear walkway. 5. Events Warm-Up: Skaters will have several minutes to warm up as a group before their event. Announcements will signal when to enter the ice, when 1 minute remains, and when it’s time to exit the ice. Start Order: The skate order determines the sequence in which skaters will perform. This can be found using the QR code at the rink on the LiveResults link. Please confirm your skate order by checking with the Ice Monitor rinkside. Be prepared and near the ice monitor/ice entry door when it’s your time to skate. Half-Ice Events: Most events use the full ice sheet; however, some events use half the ice, where two skaters perform on opposite sides of the rink. Please speak to your coach for more detailed instructions. In general, half-ice events proceed as follows after the group warm-up: Orange cones will separate the sides. Skaters will enter and proceed to their assigned side and starting position. The announcer will indicate when skaters may begin. After finishing, skaters should stop and wait until both are done. The announcer will then cue skaters to exit the ice. Awards Ceremony: Awards will be presented after each event once results are available. Celebrate the hard work and achievements of all skaters! A professional photographer will not be taking award photos. Feel free to take pictures of your skaters as they receive their medals! 6. Photography & Video Recording MKT Photography is the official photographer and videographer for the event. Please visit the MKT Photography table to purchase event photos and videos. It is against U.S. Figure Skating policy to record anyone other than your own skater. Please refrain from recording other skaters. Flash photography is strictly prohibited as it can pose a safety risk to skaters and interfere with professional photos and videos. Please respect this rule for the safety and quality of the event. 7. Tossies / “Friends” After a skater’s event, it’s tradition to give stuffed animals (“friends”). Please don’t throw gifts onto the ice due to the hockey net—feel free to hand them to your skater after the performance. 8. Support all skaters Help us create a fun, supportive environment by cheering for all skaters. They’ve worked hard to perform in front of judges and an audience. 9. Withdrawal Before the Competition: If you need to withdraw from the event, please email the competition chair at MemorialTrophyChair@gmail.com as soon as possible During the Competition (May 8–11): Inform your coach and the Ice Monitor immediately. If you’re unable to do so, your coach can notify them on your behalf. Letting us know you're withdrawing helps prevent delays because we won’t need to track down missing skaters. 10. Entrance / Exits Please avoid using the doors on the far side of the rink next to the zamboni that exit to the area between Target and the Cheesecake during the competition. Instead, use the doors to The Square and the fireplace area to access the rink. You can also walk through the mall to get to the rink. 11.
