Insights from Team USA Figure Skater Camden Pulkinen
April 2025
Team USA’s very own Camden Pulkinen recently shared his journey and insights into becoming a professional figure skater with members of the MFSCH. Here's what aspiring skaters can learn from his experiences:
Starting Out:
Camden's figure skating story began in Arizona at the age of five, initially through hockey. His transition to figure skating was influenced by his desire to compete with his sister. Over the years, his commitment led him from Arizona to Colorado Springs for better training opportunities, and now to New York, where he balances his skating career with studies in psychology and economics at Columbia University.
Learning from Experience:
Pulkinen emphasized the importance of allowing oneself time to emotionally recover after competitions, especially those that didn't go as planned. He advocates for a day of reflection, urging skaters to then dive into the details of what went wrong or could be improved. This process involves a meticulous assessment of both technique and mental preparation. For instance, when working on quad jumps, Pulkinen focuses on technique and height to prepare for future advancements in his routines. In retrospect, Pulkinen mentioned that he wished he had practiced his jumps with the goal of incorporating an extra rotation when progressing to the next jump.
Balancing Life and Skating:
One of the key points Camden highlighted was the necessity of a balanced life. He stressed the importance of not letting skating define one's entire identity. Despite the rigorous demands of both skating and academia, Pulkinen makes time for a social life, which he sees as crucial for mental health and preventing burnout. He organizes his week into high, low, and medium days to manage his training intensity effectively.

Routine and Nutrition:
A consistent routine supports both his physical and mental health. His day starts with a nutritious breakfast, often an egg and bacon scramble accompanied by orange juice and water, supplemented by snacks to keep his energy levels up during practice. This disciplined approach to nutrition and routine helps maintain his performance peak.
The Role of Coaches:
Pulkinen credits much of his success to his coaches, who provide not just technical training but also understand his needs as a student-athlete. Their flexibility and openness have been pivotal in his development, allowing him to explore and push his limits confidently.
Competition Insights:
Competing internationally, Camden notes, brings a different level of pressure compared to national events. He prepares by studying the competitive landscape and understanding the venues. Vocalizing his nerves and seeking support from peers has been beneficial. Celebrating the victories of his teammates, he finds, is one of the most rewarding aspects of his competitive life.
Conclusion:
Camden Pulkinen’s session with the MFSCH was not just about sharing how to become a top-tier figure skater but also about fostering growth, understanding, and hard work in all aspects of life. His insights remind us that while dedication to sport is crucial, so too is the dedication to oneself as a whole person. Through Pulkinen's experiences, young skaters have a blueprint not just for success in figure skating but for a well-rounded life where passion, hard work, and personal growth coexist.
A heartfelt thanks to Camden for his insights and to Pei Pei Tan for facilitating this enlightening opportunity.
